According to a Wall Street Journal report, illegal aliens will be eligible to receive work permits if their deportation is deferred through the Obama Administration’s new policy. Yesterday, the Administration announced that the Department of Homeland Security will review all deportation cases on a case-by-case basis and only deport illegal aliens who have been convicted of crimes. In a memo from ICE, the department’s agents–who are charged with enforcing the country’s immigration laws–will be empowered to pursue or dismiss immigration cases against broad categories of illegal aliens who would have benefited from the legislation—without the DREAM Act even becoming law. The agency’s rationale? It has limited resources and therefore must exercise prosecutorial discretion where it sees fit. Continue reading from The Heritage.

Alabama has suddenly become the leader in comprehensive immigration reform, passing up Arizona whose laws have had so much news coverage. By large margins, the Alabama State Legislature passed a bill, known as HB56, which covers most areas of abuses by illegal aliens.

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – Let’s see … we have high unemployment, a national debt that’s out of control, gas prices are going through the roof, and an administration that wants to continue spending, spending, and spending. With all of this going on, what does Barack Obama consider his “priority”? Simple… it’s granting amnesty to illegal aliens. Yes, the issue is back, and so is Obama’s arrogant attitude.
In true form, Obama mocked in his immigration speech on Monday, saying, “Maybe they’ll need a moat. Maybe they’ll want alligators in the moat.”

Supporters of the DREAM Act claim the bill would provide citizenship only to children who go to college or join the military. But all any version of the legislation requires is that an applicant attend any college for just two years. And if President Obama wants to reward non-citizen service members with citizenship, he already has the power to do so. The Secretary of Defense already has the authority under 10 U.S.C. § 504 (b) to enlist illegal immigrants in the military if “such enlistment is vital to the national interest,” and 8 U.S.C. § 1440 allows such immigrants to become naturalized U.S. citizens, with their applications handled at accelerated rates. The military component of the DREAM Act is a complete red herring.
