According to the Houston Chronicle, the Department of Homeland Security is trying to dismiss thousands of deportation cases against “suspected illegal immigrants.”
The Chronicle reports the Obama amnesty effort began “about a month ago” in Houston, where the Department of Homeland Security now has five attorneys working full-time on this backdoor amnesty for illegal aliens. The amnesty program is expected to be rolled out soon nationwide.

| September 11th, 2010 by Cindy in Economy/Budget When President Barack Obama was selling his economic stimulus plan to the American people, he promised that, if enacted, the legislation would prevent unemployment from rising above 8%. $3 billion in Cash for Clunkers bailouts, $10 billion in government union bailouts, $16 billion in Medicaid bailouts, $13 billion in home buyer tax credits, and $814 billion in stimulus act spending later the nation’s unemployment rate stands at 9.5%. And now the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says that number is not going to come down any time soon. Yesterday, the CBO released its 10-year budget baseline predicting that the economy will grow at an anemic 2% next year (half the growth rate it predicted last summer) and that unemployment will remain above 9% through the rest of this year. And that wasn’t even the worst news.

The Senate Judiciary Committee announced it will hold a hearing next week to discuss a bipartisan bill intended to update federal gun measures and reform what critics say is an outdated firearm licensing process.
The bill, which was proposed more than a year ago, specifically addresses inefficiencies and problems within the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives by eliminating certain restrictions on gun ownership and modernizing operations within the bureau. Committee Chairman and bill co-sponsor Patrick Leahy, Vermont Democrat, called for the hearing, and will announce the list of witnesses later this week.
Despite the general thrust of the bill in favor of gun owners and manufacturers, some conservative bloggers seized on the announcement, supposedly assuming that the hearing was some kind of plot to restrict gun rights before the end of Congress’ lame-duck session.

Administration officials earlier this year moved to block the government of South Korea from selling vintage U.S.-made M1 Garands and M1 carbines to eager stateside collectors.
The State Department confirmed to The Washington Times that it was considering “alternative options” to deal with the classic rifles. During the Clinton administration, such code words meant melting them down. The government in Seoul was told that this step was being taken for the protection of Americans. “The U.S. insisted that imports of the aging rifles could cause problems such as firearm accidents,” a South Korean Ministry of National Defense official told the Korea Times last month.

It could come down to who blinks first, with some Republicans raising the prospect of a government shutdown.
Even if Republicans succeed beyond any current predictions and capture both the Senate and the House, they wouldn’t have enough GOP votes to overcome President Barack Obama’s veto.
But Republicans could still fall back on the congressional power of the purse, denying the administration billions of dollars to carry out the most far-reaching social legislation since Medicare and Medicaid.

| September 11th, 2010 by Cindy in Healthcare Reform Health insurers say they plan to raise premiums for some Americans as a direct result of the health overhaul in coming weeks, says the Wall Street Journal.
- Aetna Inc., some BlueCross BlueShield plans and other smaller carriers have asked for premium increases of between 1 percent and 9 percent to pay for extra benefits required under the law, according to filings with state regulators.
- The rate increases largely apply to policies for individuals and small businesses and don’t include people covered by a big employer or Medicare.
- About 9 percent of Americans buy coverage through the individual market, according to the Census Bureau, and roughly one-fifth of people who get coverage through their employer work at companies with 50 or fewer employees, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.
