JERUSALEM—Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government said it would reject any moves by the Obama administration to set its own timeline and benchmarks for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, potentially establishing a new fault line between the U.S. and Israel. Key Arab leaders, such as Jordan’s King Abdullah II, have publicly called for President Barack Obama to impose on Israel the parameters for negotiations, arguing that otherwise the process will stall interminably. About 47 percent of U.S. households will pay no federal income taxes for 2009. Either their incomes were too low or they qualified for enough credits, deductions and exemptions to eliminate their liability. That is according to projections by the Tax Policy Center, a Washington research organization. In recent years, credits for low- and middle-income families have grown so much that a family of four making as much as $50,000 will owe no federal income tax for 2009, as long as there are two children younger than 17, according to a separate analysis by the consulting firm Deloitte Tax LLP: The most important legal challenge turns on the “individual mandate”—the new requirement that almost every U.S. citizen must buy government-approved health insurance. Failure to comply will be punished by an annual tax penalty that by 2016 will rise to $750 or 2% of income, whichever is higher. President Obama opposed this kind of coercion as a candidate but has become a convert. He even argued in a September interview that “I absolutely reject that notion” that this tax is a tax, because it is supposedly for your own good. |
