Yesterday the Kremlin announced that the Obama administration and Russia had reached agreement on a new nuclear arms agreement intended to replace the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). The declaration appeared to surprise the White House, as Press Secretary Robert Gibbs could only confirm that the two sides were “close” to a treaty. But U.S. officials confirm that “all major obstacles” in negotiations with Moscow have been cleared.

Bob McTeer, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and distinguished fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis, doesn’t expect a breakout of inflation any time soon in the United States. The main reason, says McTeer, is the moderate growth in the money supply that has accompanied the expansion of budget deficits.

The United States’ purchases of liquid natural gas (LNG) have dwindled and it has enough gas under its soil to inspire dreams of self-sufficiency. Other parts of the world may also be sitting on lots of gas. Those in the vanguard of this global gas revolution say it will transform the battle against carbon, threaten coal’s domination of electricity generation and, by dramatically reducing the power of exporters of oil and conventional gas, turn the geopolitics of energy on its head, says the Economist.

A new consumer protection law, which went into effect on February 1, allows Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez to expropriate virtually any company if he deems it to be in the national interest.
On January 17, Chávez expropriated six Exito supermarket stores, controlled by France’s Groupe Casino. Chávez wants to transform the chain’s outlets into what he calls “socialist megastores” that sell food, appliances, and clothing with virtually no markup, says BusinessWeek.

WASHINGTON—Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu completed a two-day trip to Washington with a closed-door meeting with President Barack Obama and no public announcements on a way forward in the Middle East peace process.
The White House’s reception for Mr. Netanyahu on Tuesday drew charges from Capitol Hill that Mr. Obama was snubbing Israel’s prime minister and worsening a highly public feud that has emerged between the two allies over the issue of Israeli construction in lands jointly claimed by Israelis and Palestinians.

Another day, two new polls showing the American people are strongly against the health care plan President Barack Obama will sign into law today. According to CNN, 59% of Americans oppose President Obama’s plan. And according to CBS News, 48% of Americans oppose the plan (with 33% in strong opposition) compared to only 37% who support it (with only 13% in strong support). Digging deeper into the CBS poll, we find that 76% of Americans disapprove of how Congress is handling its job on health care, 46% think Congress has spent too much time on health care, and 49% believe the rules and procedures used in Congress to get the current health care bill passed have been mostly unfair.
