Gibbs: If Senate Bill Passes House It Will Go to the President’s Desk

The other day I exposed the fact that Harry Reid switched the languagein the House-passed H.R. 3590 Service Members Home Ownership Tax Act of 2009 and inserted the Senate version of the healthcare bill via a manager’s amendment in order to meet the requirement of all legislation raising taxes originate in the House.

The Senate passed the revised bill with the healthcare language in it, and now the House must revote on the deceptively gutted changed bill because, according to the Constitution, the identical bill must pass both the House and Senate in order to be signed into law. And, once the Senate Health Care bill passes the House, President Obama will sign it right away. Continue Reading article.

The Up or Down Vote Our Country Really Deserves

President Barack Obama is touring the country asking for an up-or-down vote on his health care plan. Forget for a second that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) can schedule an up-or-down vote on the Senate health care bill any time she wants, and keep in mind that while Democrats are trying to create the legislative text for President Obama’s “new” health care proposal, Senate Democrats are also pushing to include student lending provisions in the reconciliation bill. What does student lending have to do with health care you might ask? Nothing. But the Senate routinely attaches seemingly unrelated matters to must-pass legislation. Continue reading article.

Beware of Taking Stimulus Money!

“If you take their money, they’ll tell you how wide to make the door,” said W.R. Keith, seventh-grade math teacher, c. 1958, concerning federal aid to education.

“When you extend your hand to take the money, that’s when they put on the handcuffs,” said Robert (“Jag”) Jaggard, M.D., c. 1983, regarding Medicare and Medicaid.

ARE UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS NO LONGER TEMPORARY?

Millions of Americans have been forced to rely on unemployment payments for extended periods as the nation struggles through its longest period of high joblessness in a generation.  Critics are taking aim, saying that the Depression-era program created as a temporary bridge for laid-off workers is turning into an expensive entitlement.

  • About 11.4 million out-of-work people now collect unemployment compensation, at a cost of $10 billion a month.
  • Half of them have been receiving payments for more than six months, the usual insurance limit.
  • But under multiple extensions enacted by the federal government in response to the downturn, workers can collect the payments for as long as 99 weeks in states with the highest unemployment rates — the longest period since the program’s inception.

SHOULD WE BE ABLE TO BUY HEALTH INSURANCE ACROSS STATE LINES?

If you live in Texas, the only health insurance you can buy is insurance regulated under Texas law.  But if bills before Congress (most notably, one sponsored by Arizona Republican Congressman John Shadegg), are enacted, Texans would be able to buy insurance regulated, say, by the laws of Virginia, or the laws of Delaware, or 47 other states, says John C. Goodman, President, CEO and the Kellye Wright Fellow of the National Center for Policy Analysis.

Proponents claim this would greatly increase competition.  Opponents claim it would undermine “consumer protections.”  Both claims are mainly wrong, says Goodman.  We should not expect the number of insurance companies trying to sell us insurance in Dallas, Texas to change at all, he explains.  And if we are worried about consumer protections, we could continue to buy Texas-regulated insurance, just as we have before.  Continue Reading article.

Obamacare to Rip This Nation To Pieces!

Congressman Eric Massa (D-NY) gave us a glimpse into the inner workings of the House Democrat Caucus.  Massa voted against ObamaCare when it came up in the House last year.  He alleged on a New York radio station that he is being forced out of Congress because of his stance on ObamaCare.  Aside from the validity of the allegations against him, Massa gives us a glimpse into a fight within the Democrat Caucus on the political viability of the President’s health care reform proposal.  Massa shows us that there are some Democrats pleading with Speaker Pelosi (D-Ca) to back away from ObamaCare. Continue reading article from Redstate.com

“Government Health Care is not about health care; It’s about Government.”

“Government Health Care is not about health care; It’s about Government.” So reads the last line of Mark Steyn’s latest brilliant article, which I strongly suggest that everyone read. He’s right, of course, but I’d go even a step further. It’s not just about government, it’s about a mindset and a freedom-squashed way of life. Once the government becomes more than just a safety net, becomes instead a catch-all stifling protective bubble, it kills freedom and the individual. At it’s core, freedom is meant to be risky. It isn’t safe; it’s just free. Continue reading article.

MIDLAND, Texas — There has been an increase in the number of women in west Texas signing up for firearm classes.

Whether it’s to face their fear of guns, or just have peace of mind in knowing they can protect themselves, more women are picking up handguns and learning the basic skills needed for protection.
