Council Of Governors Takes Shape

Obama Making Plans to Use [Abuse] Executive Power

WASHINGTON — With much of his legislative agenda stalled in Congress, President Obama and his team are preparing an array of actions using his executive power to advance energy, environmental, fiscal and other domestic policy priorities.

Mr. Obama has not given up hope of progress on Capitol Hill, aides said, and has scheduled a session with Republican leaders on health care later this month. But in the aftermath of a special election in Massachusetts that cost Democrats unilateral control of the Senate, the White House is getting ready to act on its own in the face of partisan gridlock heading into the midterm campaign. Texas Duels Over Guns

Lawmakers in firearm-friendly Texas are embroiled in a debate over how to make the state Capitol safer: get rid of guns or encourage even more.

The discussion comes after a man last month fired several shots on the steps of the towering Capitol in Austin. State troopers tackled him and no one was wounded, but the incident spotlighted a predicament for lawmakers in a state where carrying handguns is not only legal but largely cherished.

LARGEST-EVER FEDERAL PAYROLL TO HIT 2.15 MILLION

The era of big government has returned with a vengeance, in the form of the largest federal work force in modern history, says the Washington Times. 

The Obama Administration says the government will grow to 2.15 million employees this year, topping 2 million for the first time since President Clinton declared that “the era of big government is over” and joined forces with a Republican-led Congress in the 1990s to pare back the federal work force.

Five Challenges for President Obama

In the wake of the Christmas Day terror attack, President Obama made an important declaration, one that represents a startling departure from the stance he has offered since being sworn into office one year ago.  He said, “Ultimately, the buck stops with me.”  This is a remarkable reversal from a President, who at any hint of public criticism over the last twelve months, has erupted in finger-pointing.  All of his problems were “inherited,” he regularly reminds us.
